Welcome To Year 1 Enthusiastic Elephants
Our class country is Tanzania.
Our Staff Team:
Mrs Shoesmith - Class Teacher (Monday - Wednesday)
Mrs Percival - Class Teacher (Wednesday - Friday)
Mrs Hodgson - Teaching Assistant (Monday - Thursday)
Miss Webber - Teaching Assistant (Friday)
PE is on a Tuesday. Pupils should come to school dressed in their PE kit.
Entry / Exit from School:
Our class will enter the school from the side gate on Carlisle Road. Parents and Carers drop off and collect their child outside the classroom door at the bottom of the steps in the Year 1 playground. You may then exit through the gate at the bottom of the playground which leads to the ginnel. Please turn right and follow the one way system in the ginnel.
Newsletters and Information for Parents and Carers
Please find our latest newsletters and information for parents and carers in the folders below. The KIRF targets are 'Key Instant Recall Facts' in Maths. They focus on basic mental Maths recall skills to support the children in increasing their speed and accuracy of mental calculation. Please support your child at home to learn their KIRF Targets. These are changed each half-term and feed into our Maths learning in school. Please also find below the Year 1 Common Exception Words. These are words which don't follow a spelling rule or pattern and many of which phonics won't apply to. Please support your child to learn the Common Exception Words at home.

Our Online Resources
Down below you will find the range of different online resources your child can access at home. Logins have been sent home with your child for these so please encourage them to log on and have a go as often as possible. Sometimes the children's homework will be set on these platforms so please keep a look out for added tasks.
As you will be aware, Year 1 are due to take their Phonics Screening Check in Summer 2021. We are teaching Phonics daily in school and encourage the continuation of Phonics learning at home. To help parents/carers with this, we have a Phonics page set up on our school website that is full of guidance and resources to be used. The link for the page is below, we hope you find it useful.
If you are having to isolate at home but are well we have created a home-learning page to ensure you do not fall behind in your learning whilst at home.
Please follow the link below to access your home learning activities.
Meet the Teacher
Thank you to those who attended the 'Meet the Teacher' Zooms. If you were unable to join us, please find below the PowerPoint we shared at the meeting which outlines our routines.

We have loved learning about Diwali this week, the festival of light. In provision we have painted Rangoli patterns, made Diwali cards and read books about Diwali. On Thursday afternoon, we had a class Rangoli pattern challenge using chalks on the playground. We had to work in teams to plan where to put each colour, trying to make the design symmetrical. We think they looked fabulous and colourful. Unfortunately the rain washed them all away Thursday evening but luckily we took lots of photographs!

Enthusiastic Elephants, you have just blown us away this week with the way you have adapted to our new way of working. You have shown us your amazing Superhero Learning Powers, being resilient, determined, responsible and effective learners and we are so very proud of you all. A huge thank you to parents and carers too for your ongoing support this week. Pats on the back all round and have a very well deserved rest this weekend! We will see you on our Zoom call on Monday morning ready to catch up with you all and find out about our new learning challenges.

This week we have been learning about toys past and present and the materials they were/are made from. We have been learning about the more than, less than and equal signs in Maths and remembering that the greedy crocodile loves to much the biggest number! We have started to look at instructions in English and have made group videos about how to wash our hands. We have enjoyed composing our own rhythms in music and learning about the rap style of music. Finally, we have had our School Council nominations and our secret ballot. We will find out on Monday in whole school Zoom assembly who has been elected in each class but a huge well done to all candidates for their super ideas and for reading them out so well to the class. Have a fabulous weekend Elephants!
Friday 2nd October 2020
We have had a very busy week. We have been learning all sorts of things. We have been trying hard to be very kind and helpful. We have been doing some good tidying. We have been counting and we have been learning about what Greenside School was like 100 years ago. We found out that the teachers used to use a cane! We went outside to look at our school building and we noticed lots of gargoyles and that the bricks looks a bit black.
Lola- I enjoyed making a paper plate face in the Creative Area.
Hollie- I built a model of Pudsey Bandstand and Pudsey church and also a castle.
Brooke- I have been building Pudsey church too with a triangle on top.
Lily- I have been really helpful because I tidied up.
Ronnie- I liked the Playdough.
Molly- I liked making a fire breathing dragon from different strips of paper and a tube.

Friday 18th September 2020
We have had a super couple of weeks and have had lots of fun and getting stuck into our new routines so well. We have done some fabulous work and have tried our very best.
Over the past two weeks, we have drawn calm jars, practised lots of counting and writing numbers, described feelings using The Colour Monster book (available as a narrated story online too if you want to listen to it at home), coloured in some African Tinga Tinga animals, printed with our hands to make googly eye elephants, shown off our phonics skills, practised our letter formation, created a class Tanzania flag with cotton bud printing, read lots of stories, done some groovy dancing and body percussion to music and have voted for our class happy song- Waka Waka (This Time For Africa). Phew!
Continuous and Enhanced Provision:
We have also enjoyed exploring the indoor and outdoor provision areas every day. Here are some photos of our different areas. The challenges in each area change regularly to link to our current learning.
