Reading (inc. Phonics)

English – Reading and Poetry Intent

At Greenside, we know that reading is fundamental to education. Proficiency in reading is vital for pupils’ success as not only does it enable children to discover new facts and to learn at school, but opens them up to a world of new ideas, stories and opportunities. Furthermore, research shows children who read for pleasure achieve more in later life than those that do not. It is for these reasons that Greenside is a ‘Reading School’.

At Greenside, teachers read to their classes every day, irrespective of year group. This may take the form of daily ‘Storytime’ in EYFS and KS1 where children are read an engaging book or poem, or as part of an English or Guided Reading lesson in KS2 where high-quality novels and texts are shared. Through daily story times, children are exposed to rich and varied language, progressively challenging concepts and, ultimately, a love of reading. All classes in KS1 and KS2 have weekly book club time where teachers and pupils recommend books to one another, giving their opinions and hearing new stories being introduced. Across KS2, classes have timetabled daily reading time so that children can immerse themselves in books of their own choosing or those recommended to them.

All staff are committed to ensuring that every child becomes an independent, fluent and life-long reader. A love of reading is not left to chance; we aim for every child to enjoy books and poems as much as we do!

Every class from Years 1 to 6 have elected Reading Ambassadors who promote books, reading events and support with managing the school library. Our Reading Ambassadors support their peers making positive book choices through recommending titles and liaising with the English Lead to purchase new books which interest, engage and excite them.
