English - Writing Intent

We believe that a quality English curriculum should foster and develop children’s love of reading, writing and discussion. We recognise the importance of nurturing a culture where children take pride in their writing and can write clearly and accurately by adapting their language and style for a range of contexts.

At Greenside, we write for a range of audiences and purposes and aim to ensure each piece of writing is has a clear audience and purpose in mind. Whether writing to a recount to inform others of the learning from a trip or workshop; persuading a local Councillor or MP on an issue of importance; discussing with our peers the best course of action on a matter; or, writing to entertain our peers and teachers, we aim to provide real, relevant and purposeful reasons for writing.

When starting a unit of writing, we provide a range of stimuli to engage children which include educational visits and workshops, local and national events as well as writing linked to other areas of the curriculum. Children are provided opportunities to write across different subjects to demonstrate their knowledge and understanding, whilst preparing them for secondary school and beyond.

We teach a secure knowledgebase in English, underpinned by spelling, punctuation and grammar, which follows a clear pathway of progression in-line with the National Curriculum. In school, we use Read Write Inc Spelling and Nelson Handwriting to ensure effortless spelling and transition skills.  We ensure that writing is accessible for all through the use of modern technology and carefully planned adaptations. Ultimately, we believe that a secure basis in literacy skills is crucial to a high-quality education and will give our children the tools they need to participate fully as a member of society in modern Britain.
